When the Martians, led by Coordinator Ergnes Brahe, arrived in the Earth Sphere system on October 4th C.E. 73, their mission was initially one of a good will, encouraging nations to adopt the Destiny Plan, then used on Mars, as a form of Government in order to stop all future conflicts. However, the Martians found only one receptive ear in the form of then PLANT Chairman Gilbert Durandal. While Durandal was interested in their ideas, their meeting was cut short as the Earth Alliance, acting on the belief ZAFT had caused the fall of Junius 7, attacked with a fleet of warships and Nuclear missiles. It was because of this attack that ZAFT was treated first hand to the showing of one of Mar's latest mobile suits, the Astray Mars Jacket.

The Mars Jacket allowed for increased armor and weapons load out of a modified M1 Astray, while also augmenting it's speed and agility with the increase of thrusters, and the addition of wing binders that housed extra verniers and assisted with the units AMBAC control systems. ZAFT liked the idea quite a bit, however, they lacked a frame suitable for mounting this optional equipment, do in part to worsening relations with Orb, and a reliance on self built mobile suits.

The decision was made however, to go ahead with prototyping a design for a mass production mobile suit meant to take over for the ZGMF-1000 ZAKU units. Initially the role of the GOUF mobile suit, the plan was scrapped as reports from the field found the GOUF was simply too lightly armed to be effective and ultimately too close-quarters oriented. Taking the data they'd gathered from the Mars Jacket combat pack, the ZAFT designers engineered a brand new mobile suit Dubbed the ZGMF-1014 Gelgoog. Equipping it was a bit of a problem but in order to save cost the Gelgoog was given copies of several weapons already developed by ZAFT for standard armament such as it's Vajra Beam Sabers, and 20mm CIWS machine guns.

While most of the Gelgoog's internal weapons and components were taken from other machines ZAFT did build two weapons exclusively for the Gelgoog. The first was a new type of beam machine gun capable of laying down a much heavier volume of fire compared to the ZAKU's beam assault rifle. The second weapon was a reworking of the Providence Gundam's composite armed shield system. The shield mounting a Callidus Kai multi-phase beam canon meant to give the Gelgoog an unexpected punch for tight situations. Even with all these time and cost saving measures the Gelgoog saw a very limited production run do the the swift end of the war. Only a handful saw production and even fewer made it to combat before the end of the Second Bloody Valentine War. Almost all units ending up in the hands of FAITH members.
