During the final stages of the second Bloody Valentine Tragedy, the Orb Union found itself being invaded by the ZAFT Military, after heavy fighting ZAFT eventually withdrew from Orb, but the experience left Orb's military with a bitter realization. The M1 Astrya the backbone of Orb's forces since C.E. 71 was outdated. Even with upgrades to give them flight capability the M1 Astray was simply no match for the cutting edge models being fielded by ZAFT. It was because of this grim realization that Orb secretly began work on a successor to the original mass production Astray.

The MBF-M2 M2 Astray was the unit Morgenroete Incorporated came up with to replace the aging work horse of the Orb Fleet. The M2 Astray was vastly different from the M1, base3d almost entirely off the original prototype Astray frames the unit was built with the idea of backwards compatibility, and mobility as the two most important aspects to the new design. The actual design of the M2 is taken from the Astray Blue Frame Second L, despite it's similar appearance coloring to the original M1 Astray, and Astray Red Frame.

Much like the original prototype Astray Gold Frame the hand plugs of the M2 Astray as compatible with all of Orb's current, and past beam weaponry, allowing for flexibility, depending on availability. The power supply system was also improved to allow for an extended operations period by making more efficient use of power transfer, impart by gold plating the hand plug links within the M2 Astray, and impart by the advent of more efficient less power consuming computers and an even more simplified natural OS.

Improvements were also made the M2 Astray's back pack, while it retains a similar look to the original Astray's the wing binders have been completely redone, and given extra control surfaces as well as vernier ports. While the M2 Astray is incapable of flight, thanks in large part to it's redesign of it's thruster pack the unit is capable of massive boost jumps. The back pack itself features 3 engines built for the express purpose of giving the unit added agility, and jumping distance, a fourth engine aimed directly behind the Astray is meant for rapid forward acceleration. Even though the M2 Astray is flight in capable thanks to the height it can attain in booster jumps, and it's redesigned binders M2 Astray is capable of a performing quick maneuvers whiles in free fall, giving a sense of flight.

The first M2 Astray's were completely shortly before the end of the Second Bloody Valentine War, however, none were able to see combat, as the combined Orb and Terminal fleet had already departed Earth Orbit.
