The GAT-X231 Weiss Calamity came about as a result of an Earth Alliance initiative to research improvements over the original GAT-X series of Gundam's. The tests first began with the original five GAT-X units but was eventually expanded to include the three second generation GAT-X units, the Calamity being first on the list, followed by the Forbidden. The Weiss Calamity benefited the most from improvements made with the Strike Noir, featuring a battery extender the heavily armored Calamity was capable of much longer sustained operation's times dwarfing the original machine, and even shaming the new updates to both Duel, and Buster respectively. The Calamity boasted a combat operations time of just over two hours, even with full use of it's weapons based on numerous amounts of simulation data based on the piloting habits of former Extended Pilot Orga Sabnack. The Weiss Calamity features numerous new enhancements the most prominent of which are it's new shoulder mounted Canons. The Gungnir 225mm high-energy long-range beam cannon's were developed based on technology taken from the GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam.
In order to better arm the Calamity in close combat, the unit was equipped with a pair of Tyrfing Beam Boomerangs which are both capable of doubling as small short beam swords should the need arise. Other improvements included larger, more powerful 80mm Igelstellung-II CIWS mounted in the shoulders and 90mm Draupnir beam gattlings hidden under the armor plates of the forearms which slide back to expose the gattlings when in use. Other improvements included a new thruster system built into the legs which allowed for hover capabilities on Earth, giving the suit much better agility. Unlike the previous Calamity Gundam, the shield itself has been left plain, and serves only for defensive measures but the original Todesblock" 337mm plasma bazooka was replaced by a larger 340mm "Balmung" Plasma Bazooka which has a much increased power output over the original. The Weiss Calamity entered testing just two weeks before Phantom Pain's disastrous mission to attack the DSSD research station, and was subsequently never transferred to it's intended field unit, it would spend most of the Second Bloody Valentine Conflict behind the lines after it was reassigned to Phantom Pain's 132nd Mobile Test Corps.
